November15th 2008
It was a great day, it did rain at 5:00 for about 10 minutes at Old Town
even though the precipitation was all around us. First off there was the
8th Annual Florida CRX Meet, this event featured the Honda CRX / Del
Sol, but all Hondas and Acuras were welcome, in addition to their annual
meeting they were raising funds in support of XL 106.7’s Baby DJ
program, the Johnny and Jayde Morning Show have previously provided presents for
thousands of children locally on Christmas morning. Their turnout was a
little lighter than previous years but still within the organizers
expectations. Everyone had a good time and Ken wanted to express his
thanks to Old Town for providing them with a venue to meet and their
Staff for taking care of them. Thanks also to Jessica and Angela for
their help orchestrating the event.
Linda & I would venture out in our
'60 Ranchero., Steve Mc, K4SKM would
head out on the Parkway, we had to make a stop on the way. Once the
Honda’s moved out of Block 4 Steve would join us with is
'29 Model A..
Bob would be the next to arrive in his
'68 SS396 Chevelle,
Bill & Doris would stop for a visit before becoming one of those people under the
stairs. Our first trip up “Trophy Row” we would see many of the regulars
in place.
Graham, W4HFG, Carole and his mother Edith from Oldham, England would
arrive to join in today. Then we would have a meeting of the Amateur
Radio Club before dinner at
"Flippers". On our way up we would stop by and
see Dave D who was out in one of his Mustangs. Our meeting, on the
patio, was attended by Cruiser/HAMs that included Graham, W4HFG, Laura,
NO4OO, Mike, N4HHA, Annette, N4HHI, Kristen, KJ4BST, Josh, KI4UCB, Ed,
WB8BHL, T Rod, KT4ROD,
Ted, KE4TTE, Linda, K4EIO and Me, K4SLB.
Jane
took care of our very large group in great fashion. Josh had made a
special Black Forrest Cheese Cake for the event. Yum. While we were
there most of the regulars would make their way to eat as well, the
Patio opened back up after the rain about the time we headed back to
the cars.
It took a very long time to make our way back down, Graham and company
would visit with all that were out. I thought it was going to take even
longer, he, Ed and Charlie spent a lot of time with Duffy and his
T-Bucket, the very first car in block 1. Morris was just down from him
in his “My second ‘50”, Bob & Jerri would have their black Corvair just
before the 3 Amigos parking area, but I only saw two of them. We even
had a few minutes to go up and visit with Mike Singer, KJ4GNI in the
“Blue Room”. Emil, KJ4GNH was so disappointed that he couldn’t make it
over from the Clearwater area today in his “High School Flame", he is
fighting a kidney stone. Get Well, Emil. Bert & Ernie had the Comet
wagon by the stage, The
"Redline
Rodders" were in full force, Bob &
Marge had their
'65
Rambler Ambassador in his spot. Jim C had his Challenger out
tonight. The “Looney Bin” had it's usual occupants, Bob in his GMC, Cris
& Larry in their Mustang and Butch in the Comet. Roger was back in “My
Phase 2” Shane was parked next to him with his '57 Chevy. Bill L was out in his ‘55 Chevy,
welcome back Bill!
Block 4 was bustling with activity,
Roberta the "Beer Lady" was doing a
fine business. Mark was across from us in his
"Blown to Be Wild" '63 Falcon, Gary and Wanda
were in our line up in their
'55 Chevy. The earlier rain had taken it’s
toll on the car count but not on the spectators. A little rain doesn’t
keep the regular spectators away like Coy, Anna and the “Old Town
Dancers.” I even spotted a few more “Snow Bird” cars.
Esther stopped by
with the "Flag Winners" just after 8:20,
Juan Morales, our November 2008 "Cruiser of the Month" in his '55
Chevrolet 3100 pickup was led by
Dave,
Lee &
Miguel
followed by the cars from the top 3
Blocks to block 4 that becomes the "Staging Area" for Old Town's
signature event. Mike Singer, KJ4GNI, who had been at the controls of
the "Blue Room", playing a mix of nostalgic music and radio "Jingles",
gave the safety announcements, played the National Anthem,
"Wolfman Jack" proclaimed,
"It's the Saturday Nite Cruise", for this the 961st running of
this tradition. The Cruisers made the turn at "Kids
Town" on to the "Bricks" of "Deac Hundley Avenue", Mike Singer announced
the Flag Winners as the rest of the 153 cars in parade formation cruised
past, delighting a very large crowd of cheering spectators along both sides
of the Avenue. "Rain or Shine" every Saturday night of the year, there is nothing quite like it for the
"Cruisers" and it is always a treat for those watching it from the
sidewalks and boulevards.
Thank you Old Town for letting us, the curators of this "Rolling Display
of Automotive History", the cars that are the "Stars", to be their
guests this evening. Thank you to the Old Town Merchants Association and
the Sponsors of this event, "Valvoline", the "General Store", the "A&W",
"Out of this World Embroidery",
"Wound 'N Around", Pepsi, Roberts Brothers, the
"Tropical Breeze" & "Flippers"
just to name a few.
Thank you to Allan,
Joe,
Ron,
Gary,
Lee,
Dave,
Esther,
Miguel,
Mesha,
Chrisanne and the entire
Cruise Staff and fellow Cruisers for making
our 312th consecutive Saturday a fun and safe one.
On to the "Flag Winners".
Tonight's
random drawing winners received the coveted "Old Town Checkered Flag"
and the new
"Clock Pin", along with $25 cash, A Case of Oil from Valvoline
and a drink from the
Tropical Breeze.
Congratulations
to the Checkered Flag Winners!
