Linda & I would head to the "top of the Hill" to meet up with Steve Mc, K4SKM in his
'64 Corvair. It was warming up a
bit but it was still only about 65. this week had been one of record low
temperatures and the chances of rain were back in the forecast.
Lee
was at the point, We would make the turn
at
Old Town Clock
in our
'60 Ranchero,
Juan Morales, our November 2008 "Cruiser of the Month"
would be parked in his place of honor.
Dave
was by the Cruise office to register the Cruisers.
Gary was stationed by the <<<< >>>>> blinking sign.
The
"Looney Bin" was home to Bruce's "Split Window" Corvette,
Butch in his
'64 Comet along with Cris & Larry
in their
Mustang. Block 3 was full of
Mercury Cougars well mainly, anyway there were a few embers of the
Sunshine State Cougars that had other cars with in their show.
This Mercury cousin to the Mustang, the early years that is, has always
been a favorite of Cruisers. It is very impressive to see over 40 of
them on display.
Graham, G4HFG from Oldham, England
came in over the radio as we crossed Florida Plaza to take our spots
behind "Black Market Minerals". Once we got our cars situated and set up
for the day,
Roberta the "Beer Lady"
arrived and said, "You Guys are
late!" I think it was she was early, then it started to rain, just long enough to spot the cars and
Make Steve put his top up.
Linda wasn't feeling to well, this stupid "Quick Change" weather that we
have been having got to her more than it did me. She would knit while I
made the trip up to see who was in town.
James had his
"Firebird" parked in
block 2. Many of the
"Redline
Rodders" were in their usual spots. Don & Jackie
were next to the stairs in their Mustang convertible, Karen and the Kids
would be behind them. Pablo & Nilda would have their '68 Nova
across the way. Darrell has his LTD just North of the stage. Gary would
have his '36 Ford in it's regular spot next to Bob's '70 Chevy pickup.
Only 1 of the 3 Amigos were in place but Ken was expecting the rest of
them soon. Emil, KJ4GNH, who had been at the "Dream Cruise" in Daytona
last week was back in the spot he likes to call his own with his
'48
Ford. Bill had his
'53 Ford pickup back along the fence,
he said it was good to be back home. On the way back down to the car
Bob & Marge would back their
'65
Rambler Ambassador convertible into his spot. By now most
of the Water Spots had been dried off the cars on display. Once I was
back at the car
Bill & Doris would stop by for
their visit before heading on up to join the people under the stairs.
Even with all of the other shows going on around the area and with the
"Chill" in the air the cars kept rolling in at a steady pace. The
spectator crowd was getting quite large very early today. It was time,
you guessed it, dinner at
"Flippers".
On the way up "Trophy Row" we spotted several cars we haven't seen out
before. Like a '35 Chrysler Airflow and a "Mean Looking"
Customized '56 Merc, check out the photos on line, Ted
took almost 300 of them. Just to clear something up for all of
you, I do not get my meals for free, I pay the same as you all do. Linda
and I enjoy the food there and have made friends with most of the staff
and
Jane has always taken great
care of us as have all of the servers there. I mean I wouldn't mind if
they would take care of our meal and why would it matter if they did? I
do give them good press every week. It is just part of our routine that
we enjoy. Anyway, many of the other "Regulars" that stop in there would
also make their way into the dining room. Tony & Marianne, Russ, Dick &
Jackie. Pep & Nancy with Jim would also join in on the patio. We were
joined by Cheryl, Steve's better half, yes it must be fall. While we
were eating. On our walk back more of the regulars were in place, John
in his
'57 Chevy, Bert & Ernie would be
out in their
Comet Wagon. Lynn would be out in
her
'49 Ford Pickup. "Cousin
John" in his Caddy. Coy was spotted looking at the cars and
visiting. The bothers Z were out along with Linda & Kay. Louie in his
Nova wagon and Joe in his Mustang.
Once we were back in Block 4 the cars kept rolling in. Neil & Elaine
that would have their '62 Rolls Royce across
from us.
Doc would be in the
"Tater Truck" parked one over
from the dumpster, Suzanne joined him later. The "3
Stooges"
"Bo" in his
Corvair,
John & Jennifer R in his
Mustang and
Bob in his
'36 Ford
Humpback, and
would make their way to the area behind the roller coaster. "Red Racer" Ted, KE4TTE would
be out shooting everyone and everything, with his trusty camera. Mark
would have his
"Blown to Be Wild" '63 Falcon
just down from us as would Nick & Fran have the
'32 Ford 5 Window Coupe, Bob
would bring his
'68 SS396 Chevelle out with it's new motor!
Don & Tara would be out in one of their Camaros. Conrad would be in his
favorite spot with his
1NFT57. Roger F would have his
'56 Chevy out and
Larry in one of his favorite Fords. Once again time and space just flies
by.
Esther stopped by
with the "Flag Winners" just after 8:20,
Juan Morales, our November 2008 "Cruiser of the Month" in his '55
Chevrolet 3100 pickup,
for the first time during his reign.
was led by
Dave,
Lee &
Mesha
followed by 40 plus participants and their cars
from the "Sunshine Stage Cougars" gathering that had been in town all
day, then the rest of the cars from the top 3
Blocks to block 4 that becomes the "Staging Area" for Old Town's
signature event. Mike Singer, KJ4GNI, who had been at the controls of
the "Blue Room", playing a mix of nostalgic music and radio "Jingles",
gave the safety announcements. Played the National Anthem,
"Wolfman Jack" proclaimed,
"It's the Saturday Nite Cruise", for this the 959th running of
this tradition.
The Cruisers made the turn at "Kids
Town" on to the "Bricks" of "Deac Hundley Avenue", Mike Singer announced
the Flag Winners as the rest of the 248 cars in parade formation cruised
past, delighting a very large crowd of cheering spectators along both sides
of the Avenue. "Rain or Shine" every Saturday night of the year, there is nothing quite like it for the
"Cruisers" and it is always a treat for those watching it from the
sidewalks and boulevards.
Thank you Old Town for letting us, the curators of this "Rolling Display
of Automotive History", the cars that are the "Stars", to be their
guests this evening. Thank you to the Old Town Merchants Association and
the Sponsors of this event, "Valvoline", the "General Store", the "A&W",
"Out of this World Embroidery",
"Wound 'N Around", Pepsi, Roberts Brothers, the
"Tropical Breeze" & "Flippers"
just to name a few.
Thank you to Allan,
Joe,
Ron,
Gary,
Lee,
Dave,
Esther,
Miguel,
Mesha,
Chrisanne and the entire
Cruise Staff and fellow Cruisers for making
our 310th consecutive Saturday a fun and safe one.
