October 25th 2008
Linda & I would head out on 192 again this week, Steve Mc, K4SKM in his
'29 Ford Model A Sport Coupe
would by pass the meeting place, the timing was off a little and he just
wanted to keep a goin'.
When we arrived
Lee
was at the point,
Dave
was by the Haunted House to register the Cruisers. As we made the turn
at
Old Town Clock
in our
'60 Ranchero,
Bill Mabry, our October 2008 "Cruiser of the Month"
would be parked in his place of honor. The
"Looney Bin" had Bob in his GMC pickup and a construction
dumpster. Gary was at the gate on Florida Plaza, the B.O.P.C. was in "Town" since 9:00AM, hundreds of these GM's were in
place starting by the general store and wrapping all the way around
"Kid's Town". Just about every model of Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and
Cadillac were on display. The "Wookie" had his flamed out
'65 Buick in
the mix. Steve would have his
'77 deVille out as would Andy parked next to
him with his
'79 deVille. George would also have his Chevy powered Olds
just down from them. I didn't get a actual an count but it sure was a lot
of them. Vendors were in place behind the General Store and judging by
the crowd it was a very successful event.
Steve Mc was in the spot next
to ours dressed in period correct garb for his car. I was in possibly
scariest costume of them all, a
suit & tie. every one is so
used to seeing me in my signature Hawaiian shirt, "Radio Shorts" and
sandals, it was a shock.
I would take a trip with Gary on the golf cart to tour the B.O.P.C.
cars, lots and lots of Oldsmobiles as it was hosted by the
Olds club of
Florida. Yes there were plenty of Pontiacs, Buicks and Cadillacs as
well. Once I got back to the car it was time to take our first stroll up
"Trophy Row" to see who else was in town. There were several cars that
had not been out in a while but by the time we made it to Block 2 many
of the regulars were in place.
Butch would arrive in his
'64 Comet.
James had his
"Firebird" parked in
block 2. Many of the
"Redline
Rodders" were in their usual spots. Don & Jackie
were next to the stairs in their Mustang convertible, Karen and the Kids
would be behind them. Pablo & Nilda would would have their '68 Nova across the
way. Parked near the top of Block 1 was Bob & Jerri's '63 Corvair.
Duffy would have his
T-Bucket in the very top spot.
Graham, G4HFG from Oldham, England
came in over the radio for the first of several times through out the day.
Bob & Marge would back their
'65
Rambler Ambassador convertible into his spot as we made
our way back down to the car. Across from them was John in his
'57 Chevy. Once we were back
at the car
Bill & Doris would stop by for
their visit before heading on up to join the people under the stairs.
Mark would arrive in his
"Blown to Be Wild" '63 Falcon
and head off to get into his costume.
Nick and Fran would arrive in the
'32 Ford 5 Window Coupe, but it didn't look like him, it actually looked
more like Mark. Anyway, they parked leaving a space for Bob who would
arrive later in his
'71 Camaro,
Mark or was it? He had
an awful lot of spare body parts with him, I guess he did change, would
make it back to Block 4 before we headed out to eat. It was time,
you guessed it, dinner at
"Flippers",
on our way up
we would bump in to
Charlie and then some
clown arrived in a Model A pickup, Steve Mc
would join us alfresco and yes,
Jane took great care of us
and even had a few moments to chat. John and James would also choose the
patio to dine. There were many cars that would make their way in to
"Town" as we finished up.
On our way back down, even more of the regulars were now in place, Bert & Ernie would be
out in their
Comet Wagon. Lynn would be out in
her daily driver. "Cousin
John" in his Caddy. Coy was spotted looking at the cars and
visiting. Many of the participants of the earlier show would be mixed
in.
Once we were back in Block 4 the cars kept rolling in. 2 of
our own "3
Stooges"
Bob in his
'36 Ford
Humpback, and
John & Jennifer R along in his
Mustang
would make their way to the area just down from Neil & Elaine
that would have their '62 Healy and '62 TR6 across
from us.
Doc would be in the
"Mach 1" parked one over
from the dumpster, Suzanne joined him later. "Red Racer" Ted, KE4TTE would
be out shooting everyone and everything, with his trusty camera. Over 500
photos and of course he'll do his slideshow for posting on YouTube,
along with posting a video of the band after the cruise with the "Old
Town Dancers" that had a
Hippy Chick and a couple of
Crash
Test Dummies dancing with
them. These guys had been around most of the night pointing out things.
Steve & Carol stopped by for a minute, they had their
'67 Camaro out
tonight. Another Clown was in Mark's "Junkyard Jewel".
Roberta the "Beer Lady"
was doing a fine business. "Big Jim" and Norma were out with some
visitors from Michigan, no Cruiser, he only has 3 of them. I mean this
town was really rockin' tonight, all of these great cars and the people
that keep bringing us back, the spectators that included Bob & Barb from
near Glasgow, Scotland, Brian &
Quintino, and Bob, N2SJX who I ran into
during the end of the B.O.P.C. show. The next couple of hours flew by. I
know I have missed a lot of the folks I talked with but this is all I
have the space for.
Esther and Cordell stopped by
with the "Flag Winners" just after 8:20,
Bill Mabry, our October 2008 "Cruiser of the Month" in his '53 Ford pickup "Showtime",
for the last time during his reign.
was led by
Dave,
Lee &
Mesha
followed by the rest of the cars from the top 3
Blocks to block 4 that becomes the "Staging Area" for Old Town's
signature event. Mike Singer, KJ4GNI, who had been at the controls of
the "Blue Room", playing a mix of nostalgic music and radio "Jingles",
gave the safety announcements. Played the National Anthem,
"Wolfman Jack" proclaimed,
"It's the Saturday Nite Cruise", for this the 958th running of
this tradition. The Cruisers made the turn at "Kids
Town" on to the "Bricks" of "Deac Hundley Avenue", Mike Singer announced
the Flag Winners as the rest of the 225 cars in parade formation cruised
past, delighting a very large crowd of cheering spectators along both sides
of the Avenue. "Rain or Shine" every Saturday night of the year, there is nothing quite like it for the
"Cruisers" and it is always a treat for those watching it from the
sidewalks and boulevards.
Thank you Old Town for letting us, the curators of this "Rolling Display
of Automotive History", the cars that are the "Stars", to be their
guests this evening. Thank you to the Old Town Merchants Association and
the Sponsors of this event, "Valvoline", the "General Store", the "A&W",
"Out of this World Embroidery",
"Wound 'N Around", Pepsi, Roberts Brothers, the
"Tropical Breeze" & "Flippers"
just to name a few.
Thank you to Allan,
Joe,
Ron,
Gary,
Lee,
Dave,
Esther,
Miguel,
Mesha,
Chrisanne and the entire Cruise Staff and fellow Cruisers for making
our 309th consecutive Saturday a fun and safe one.
On to the "Flag Winners".
Tonight's
random drawing winners received the coveted "Old Town Checkered Flag"
and the new
"Clock Pin", along with $25 cash, A Case of Oil from Valvoline
and a drink from the
Tropical Breeze.
Congratulations
to the Checkered Flag Winners!
