It was raining as we made our way on US 192 to nearby Old Town, the
promise of rain and 2 other car shows would no doubt take a toll on the
number of participants today. Steve Mc, K4SKM, would join us later if
the rain stops. Mike, N4HHA and Kristen, KJ4BST wouldn't be out tonight,
the Corvair is getting a drive train transplant. Linda & I would arrive
just after 1:30,
Gary would greet us at the gate. A little further down
the bricks
Kathy would register us. We
were the 25th car to make it out today.
We would make our turn by the
Old Town Clock and make our way
towards "Trophy Row". The "Looney Bin" would be occupied by cars I
hadn't seen before. Gary & Kathy's
Fairlaine was parked by the gate
and the other side only had Doug in Bill's '55 Chevy. The regulars from
the bottom of Block 3 were missing again. We would situate our
'60
Ranchero in our "Decades of Cruising" spot at the
top of Block 4 like we had done so many times before. After relaxing a
bit, Linda catching up on some knitting it was time to make our
way up to the top of "Trophy Row" to see who was out today. Many of the
"Redline Rodders" were in place,
Bob & Marge would back their
'65 Rambler Ambassador convertible into his spot.
Don & Jackie were out in "Pearl", they had been on vacation for a
month or so. Karen and the Kid's were behind the stairs. Darrell had
his '66 Ford LTD just where he likes it. Emil was over from Clearwater
with his
"High School
Flame"
as usual, in a spot he likes to call his own.
Bill would have his
"Show Time" pickup along
the fence. The "3 Amigos" would arrive and take their
spots.
Once we were back at the car it was time for another rest, it was Hot
and the earlier rain just seemed to make it a bit of a sauna.
It would just be Linda and I that headed towards
"Flippers"
for dinner. On the way up Jim would be out in his
'67 GTO,
parked across from "Big" john who had his '34 Ford angled into
his spot
next to the "Looney Bin". Cris & Larry had their
Mustang across from it's usual spot. While dinning alfresco, I spotted Steve Mc, K4SKM in his
'29 Ford Model A Sport Coupe then "Lucky Louie"
would arrive in his
'50 Ford. "Cousin John" in his '72 deVille and Doc &
Suzanne in the
Mach1.
Jane would serve us in her
usual fashion. On our way back down to the cars,
T-Rod, KT4ROD, met us
by the crosswalk on Deac Hundley Ave.
Charlie had made his
way out to "Trophy Row" and was visiting with Emil, the gang under the
stairs had grown to include Pep & Nancy,
Bert & Laverne, who were out in their '66 Comet.
A steady stream of
cars made their way on to "Trophy Row". Nick would back
his
'32
Ford next to the Mach1, Gary was riding with him and Mark
would join in later. Fran & Wanda would come out in the daily driver.
Roberta the "Beer Lady"
with her foot in a cast, not slowing her down a bit, was doing fine
business quenching those with a thirst at her beer tent behind the
General Store. Tom & Chris would be out in the' Vette, Doug &
Trish in their '68 Bronco and of course Tony & Donna were parked next to
them in block 4. Mark was out in his '56 Chevy, Mike & Linda had their
big Block Chevelle across from us. For a day that there were only 54
cars by 5:00 the place was now filling up nicely, the spectator crowd
was very large for such a Hot Summer day. Tom & Debbie were out in their
'66 Chevy, we saw them with Anthony, he was trying to keep his eyes open
to see the cars, I spotted his Mom and Dad, Brian & Missy later in their
'71 Chevy
pickup. I think Tom & Debbie left without claiming their Flag. It ended up that there were
166 Cars for them to look at, no one seemed disappointed. I know we had
a good time with old friends and the new ones we made tonight.
Esther stopped by with the "Flag
Winners" just after 8:20,
James Butler in his '67 Pontiac Firebird, our August, 2008 "Cruiser of the Month"
was led by
Dave,
Lee and
Kathy followed by rest of the cars from the top 3 Blocks to block 4 that
becomes the "Staging Area" for Old Town's signature event. Mike Singer
who had been at the controls of the "Blue Room", playing a mix of
nostalgic music and radio "Jingles", gave the safety announcements.
Played the National Anthem, "Wolfman Jack" proclaimed, "It's the
Saturday Nite Cruise", for this the 946th running of this tradition. The
Cruisers made the turn at "Kids Town" on to the "Bricks" of "Deac
Hundley Avenue", Mike Singer announced the Flag Winners as the rest of
the 166 cars in parade formation cruised past, delighting a very
large crowd of cheering spectators, from all parts of this planet and
maybe a few others, along both sides of the Avenue.
"Rain or Shine" every Saturday night of the year, there is nothing quite
like it for the "Cruisers" and it is always a treat for those watching
it from the sidewalks and boulevards.
Thank you Old Town for letting us, the
curators of this "Rolling Display of Automotive History", the cars that
are the "Stars", to be their guests this evening. Thank you to the Old
Town Merchants Association and the Sponsors of this event, "Valvoline",
the "General Store", the "A&W",
"Out of this
World Embroidery", Pepsi, Roberts Brothers & "Flippers"
just to
name a few. Thank you to
Allan,
Joe,
Lee,
Ron,
Gary,
Kathy,
Dave,
Esther
and the entire Cruise Staff and fellow Cruisers for
making our 298th consecutive Saturday a fun and safe one
Tonight's random drawing winners
received the coveted "Old Town
Checkered Flag" and the new "Clock Pin", along with $25 cash, A Case of Oil from Valvoline and a drink
from the Tropical Breeze.
Congratulations to the Checkered Flag Winners!
