July 19th, 2008
It was a beautiful Saturday morning,
Graham, G4HFG, from Oldham, England had already connected up to the
local repeater to spend the day with us, the
plan was to meet with Steve Mc, K4SKM in his
'64 Corvair convertible along
with Mike, N4HHA in his
63 Corvair convertible at the "Top
of the Hill" at 1:15 as we have done so many times before. Yes, it would be
another trek out the "Parkway" in our
'60
Ranchero to the same place we go each and
every week
and spend the whole day regardless of the
weather.
To some it may seem rather boring to spend every Saturday like this,
well, it isn't! It is the same but then again it is always different, I
guess you would need to experience it yourself to really know just how
great of a time it really is. When we
arrived
Dave
and
Gary were greeting the Cruisers at
the gate, a little further down the bricks was
Kathy, in her "Poodle Skirt"
filling in at Bratt's registration area. We would make our turn by
the
Old Town Clock and make our way towards "Trophy Row".
The "Looney Bin" didn't have any of it's regular residents in it as of
yet but the bottom of Block 3 would have Roger & Sue out in their '70
Camaro and James in his
'67
Firebird along with Shane in his '57 Chevy.
Gary & Kathy's
Fairlaine was in it's spot on the
other side James came over and dropped the cable for us so that
our little caravan could make it's way to Block 4. We weren't the first
to arrive to this Block, there was a '56 Ford Stake Truck on the East
side and Conrad had his
'57 Chevy pickup down below the Beer tent,
it was good to see him back in "Town". We all caught up with Steve, Mc,
who had been in Germany visiting with a Cruise Spectator friend that he
has made right here at Old Town a few years ago. Then we spotted
Evelyn and granddaughter, Michelle walking up from the spectator
parking, Tracy, Ed's daughter was with them. It looked like a bit of a
reunion was in store. Ed then came across Florida Plaza in the
'64
Corvair Coupe, with grandsons, Dustin and Brian.
It was time for Linda and I to make our way up to the top of "Trophy
Row" to see who was out today. Kevin, KM4FSU was on his way out to join
us for a while. Tony & Marianne would be out in the '71 Monte Carlo, Russ &
Phyllis in their Chevelle and John & Terri in their Mustang were near
the
"Redline Rodders"
that were in place, Ray was nearby in his
Deuce Coupe. Karen and the kids we're in their favorite spots. The "3
Amigos" weren't out yet but Those 3 Guys from Winter
Haven, well actually it was 4 of them, Bill with his
"Show Time" pickup along
the fence, Bill
with his
'54 Merc pickup and Leon would have his
'57
Chevy pickup nearby, even Leonard would be here
today in his
'54 Chevy. Emil was over from Clearwater with his
"High School
Flame"
as usual, it would be in between Morris's "My 2nd 50", Ford and Duffy's
T-Bucket. We would run into
Bill & Doris on
our way back to the car, when we stopped to chat with Jennifer, who was
out tonight doing a raffle for the benefit of Jim Kurzon's family. We wish
you a speedy recovery Jim. It is always good to see her and the
F-85 in
"Town" for what ever reason.
After being back at the car for a while it was time to head out for
dinner, on the way, Bob would back his
'40 Buick into his spot, the "3 Amigos'
were in their spots, Emil was
around the corner with
Charlie, in the breezeway, there were 5 of us that
chose to dine alfresco at
"Flippers". While
we were there many of the "Regulars" would make their way down the
bricks and some over to get a meal,
Jane would serve us in her
usual fashion, John & Rich would take a table on the patio, John parked his
'57 Chevy
near the bottom of Block 4. Just about the time we were done and heading
back to the cars, Kristen, KJ4BST and Annette, N4HHI came to Old
Town. We all sort of split up and headed down "Trophy Row", we visited
with more of the Cruisers on the way back, "Big John" was now in his
parking spot, Dave Dean had his latest Model A out, Newt had the '57
Chevy convertible next to it. Even Joe R had his Ford under the canopy.
Rich was on duty in the Mike Kelly's Cruise News office. Doug was over
by the El Camino. The streets were staring to bustle, even the black
storm clouds that popped up weren't causing a panic.
Once we were back in Block 4,
T Rod, KT4ROD would make his way out
to take a few photos for us,
Coy along with hundreds of regular spectators and what seemed like
thousands of new faces. Jeff had joined us in Block 4 earlier in his
'59
Edsel, Dave & Nancy were in a '59 Edsel Corsair convertible and Dan Z
would debut his latest
'41 Willys.
Roberta the "Beer Lady"
would be set up and visiting with all that stopped by, Nick and Francine
were in their
'32
Ford, Gary & Wanda had their
"Remember When" '55 Chevy, parked next
to them. Mark from Parrish was out with reports on his latest project, I
just can't wait to see his latest "Ground Pounder", after all it
resembles a Falcon. Bob & Marge would dodge a few rain drops to arrive
in their
'68 SS396 Chevelle. We only
received a few annoying drops of rain but the cloud cover and nearby
rain cooled it off nicely.
"The Dukes" set up on their corner just about 7:00PM doing what they
Doo best. It was a busy night, one thing you can usually count on every
Saturday night is that John B will bring his
66 'Vette almost every week. The
"Looney Bin" will always have one of it's regulars, the
Cruisers will eat at one of the 18 restaurants, the kids or grandkids
will enjoy the 75 rides that are on ether end of the Brick Streets and
we will be on Block 4.
Esther and
Mesha stopped by with the "Flag
Winners" just after 8:20,
Rich & his son Doug Stewart, our July 2008
"Cruiser of the Month" in their '67 El Camino
was led by Dave, Esther and Allan, followed by rest of the cars from the top 3 Blocks to block 4 that
becomes the "Staging Area" for Old Town's signature event. Mike Singer
who had been at the controls of the "Blue Room", playing a mix of
nostalgic music and radio "Jingles", gave the safety announcements.
Played the National Anthem, "Wolfman Jack" proclaimed, "It's the
Saturday Nite Cruise", for this the 943rd running of this tradition. The
Cruisers made the turn at "Kids Town" on to the "Bricks" of "Deac
Hundley Avenue", Mike Singer announced the Flag Winners as the rest of
the 196 cars in parade formation cruised past, delighting a very
large crowd of cheering spectators, along both sides of the Avenue.
"Rain or Shine" every Saturday night of the year, there is nothing quite
like it for the "Cruisers" and it is always a treat for those watching
it from the sidewalks and boulevards.
Thank you Old Town for letting us, the
curators of this "Rolling Display of Automotive History", the cars that
are the "Stars", to be their guests this evening. Thank you to the Old
Town Merchants Association and the Sponsors of this event, "Valvoline",
the "General Store", the "A&W", "Out of this
World Embroidery", Pepsi, Roberts Brothers,
Race Depot & "Flippers"
just to
name a few. Thank you to
Allan,
Joe,
Lee,
Ron,
Gary,
Kathy,
Dave,
Esther,
Mesha
and the entire Cruise Staff and fellow Cruisers for
making our 295th consecutive Saturday a
fun and safe one.
Tonight's random drawing winners
received the coveted "Old Town
Checkered Flag" and the new "Clock Pin", along with $25 cash, A Case of Oil from Valvoline and a drink
from the Tropical Breeze.
Congratulations to the Checkered Flag Winners!
