June 21st, 2008
We left home at 1:00 in quite a rainstorm.
Mike. N4HHA, in his
Corvair convertible was to meet us in our '60 Ranchero
at the top of the "Hill" but he had to backtrack to get something he
forgot so were headed out 192 on our own.
Lee greeted us umbrella in hand but
he still had
that welcoming smile of his. Bratt would be in front of the
Coffee Shop, staying out of the rain. As we made our turn by the
Clock we
noticed that the Loony Bin would have
Butch & Steph in the Comet convertible. Cris & Larry in the '70 Mustang
and then Bob in his GMC. As we made our way to Block 4, Doug would have
Bill's Chevy in the last spot on the west side of Block 3,
Gary & Kathy's Fairlaine was across from it, James who was in his
'67
Firebird dropped the gates for us.
Shane in his
'57 Chevy was in his favorite spot nearby.
We would just hang around under the awning behind "Black Market
Minerals" to let the rain subside.
Bill & Doris would stop by for a
chat.
Graham, G4HFG
from Oldham, England would check in over the radio as did Kristen,
KJ4BST, who was in Chicago at a family function, she didn't want to go a
Saturday without at least being in touch with the Cruise. Mark R stopped
by for a visit, he should take delivery of his Nash tomorrow and we
should see him back on the "Bricks" soon.
The rain would let up about
3:45 so we would make our way to "Flippers"
for dinner. Most of the "Redline Rodders" would be in place, Bob & Marge
were with them as well in their '40 Buick, Karen and the Kids were
behind the stairs. Darrell was back from his trip and he had his LTD
just where he likes it. The "3 Amigos" were in place in their spots in
Block 1. There just weren't too many cars out yet, the rain was keeping
them away. It was nice enough to dine alfresco and
Jane would take good
care of us as usual. I spotted Nick & Fran then Mark a little later,
they didn't bring the '32 Coupe out and Mark is still waiting for his
latest car to arrive from Indiana.
On our way back down to Block 4 there were more
Cruisers in place. Bert & "Ernie" were near the stage in their '66 Comet
wagon. Pep & Nancy were under the stairs with the gang that now included
Pablo & Nilda and Bill & Doris. I went up to see Mike Singer for
a few minutes. The Sun actually came out for a while.
"Big John" would now be in his favorite spot in a Laguna Blue '66
Corvette roadster, he sure finds some great cars! John B was spotted in his "Slick '51", he just got back from Michigan.
"Red Racer", KE4TTE, stopped out to take some photos.
"Roberta the "Beer Lady"
was setting up behind the General Store. I went in to visit with
Winston
for a little while. Linda then went back up to interview Derrick at the
"Old
Town Portrait Gallery". I would also tag along and visit with Vic,
Allan and more of the staff and watch the flow of cars that were coming
in. Allan is heading for China and will send us an update that you can
read here in the pages of this newsletter. The rain started again, well,
more of a drizzle. The rest of the night was slow, Cruiser wise but the
Spectator population was exploding. Ed, WB8BHL. stopped out to take some
pictures and a few more cars would make it to Block 4.
Mesha stopped by with the
"Flag Winners" just after 8:20, Dave Dean, filling in for our June 2008
"Cruiser of the Month" in "Mint Julep", '57 Chevy convertible was led by Lee & Gary, followed by the rest of the cars from the top 3 Blocks to block 4 that
becomes the "Staging Area" for Old Town's signature event. Mike Singer
who had been at the controls of the "Blue Room", playing a mix of
nostalgic music and radio "Jingles", gave the safety announcements.
Played the National Anthem, "Wolfman Jack" proclaimed, "It's the
Saturday Nite Cruise", for this the 939th running of this tradition. Bratt & Lee would lead the Cruisers
up the even side of "Deac Hundley Avenue", Mike Singer announced the
Flag Winners as the rest of the 95 cars in parade formation, made the
turn by "Kids Town" on to the "Bricks", delighting a very large
crowd of cheering spectators, on both sides of the Avenue. "Rain or
Shine" every Saturday night of the year, there is nothing quite like it
for the "Cruisers" and it is always a treat for those watching it from
the sidewalks and boulevards.
Thank you Old Town for letting us, the
curators of this "Rolling Display of Automotive History", the cars that
are the "Stars", to be their guests this evening. Thank you to the Old
Town Merchants Association and the Sponsors of this event, "Valvoline",
the "General Store", the "A&W", "Out of this
World Embroidery", Pepsi, Roberts Brothers,
Race Depot & "Flippers"
just to
name a few. Thank you to
Allan, Joe,
Nikki,
Lee, Bratt,
Gary, Dave,
and the entire Cruise Staff and fellow Cruisers for
making our 291st consecutive Saturday a
fun and safe one.
Tonight's random drawing winners that and received the coveted "Old Town
Checkered Flag" along with $25 cash, A Case of Oil from Valvoline and a drink
from the Tropical Breeze.
Congratulations to the Checkered Flag Winners!
