June 14th, 2008
It was a beautiful day,
the last weekend of Spring, Flag Day even, the weatherman was predicting a 30% chance
of rain, many of the "Regulars" would be heading out of town for
vacations and visiting with grandkids, things like that. Last weekend
just about everyone was out at the 18th Anniversary. So this week the
Cruise Staff was able to run at a bit slower pace, I know they enjoyed
themselves last week but today they could visit a little more with the
Cruisers as normal. Last nights Anniversary Cruise was over as well. It
too was a good turnout and lots of fun for all that attended.
Anyway, we had our regular caravan from the top of
the hill, just about 1:00. Steve Mc, K4SKM, in his '64 Corvair and Mike.
N4HHA, in his
Corvair convertible would meet us in our '60 Ranchero for
the run across the "Parkway" for today. We would arrive at the Gate at
the normal time, today Gary and Kathy C would be the ones with the warm
smiles as we pulled up. Bratt would register us a little further down
the bricks. Old Town already had a lot of spectators on the streets.
Things were back to normal, as we made our turn at the Clock "Big John"
would have his '34 Ford Tudor on the corner, the Loony Bin would have
Bob in his GMC, Larry in his Mustang and Butch was out in the Comet
convertible. As we made our way to Block 4, Roger & Sue had their Camaro
in their favorite spot, Doug would have Bill's Chevy nearby, Bill would
even stop out later in his customized scooter and Gary & Kathy's
Fairlaine was across from it as well as Shane in his '57 Chevy. James
who was in his '67 Firebird dropped the gate for us. Once we were
situated we all decided to just relax for a while. It wasn't long before
Conrad would arrive and park his 1NFT57 down behind the general store
just where he likes it. Joe would stop by and pick up the cone that was
in our spot and visit for a while. Mark, from Parrish, would arrive with
out a car, the Chevelle has been sold and he is waiting for his '63
Falcon to arrive but he doesn't like to miss a Saturday.
On our way up to "Flippers" for dinner we would visit
with Richard & Doug that had the El Camino parked across from Mike
Kelley's Cruise News stand and the "Redline Rodders" that were in place
along with Karen & the kids that were behind the steps. Pablo & Nilda
were under them. Tony & Marianne along with Russ & Phyllis were parked
across from there. Lynn would have her '49 Ford pickup just down from
them. Mark, Mike & Ken were in their favorite spots just down from Emil
in his "High School Dream" who was situated near the top of Block 1.
Bill would have his "Show Time" pickup parked at the very top. This
Cruise was building slowly but I knew that it would be a good one by
days end. Graham, G4HFG, would join us for dinner over the radio as
usual and Jane would take good care of us as well. Charlie would stop by
looking for his newsletter. Many of the other regulars that eat at
Flippers would make their way inside. By now there was a steady stream
of Cruisers making their way down the bricks of "Deac Hundley Ave."
On our way back down we would visit with more of the
Cruisers that made their way in. I even had a chance to say Hello to
Mike Singer as he made his way to the "Blue Room". The "Buzz" on "Trophy
Row" was a positive one on last weeks annual event. Allan & the Staff
were a little more relaxed with the event now behind them. Jeff would
make his way to Block 4 in his '59 Edsel, Ron S would follow in his '41
Packard.
Roberta the "Beer Lady" would be doing a fine business by now.
Doc & Suzanne would arrive by now in the old "Tater Truck". The evening
went by too fast, lots of visiting with spectators from all over the
planet and fellow Cruisers. "Peanut Butter Company was on stage, "The
Dukes" were on their corner.
Sarah stopped by with the
"Flag Winners" just after 8:20, Dave Dean, filling in for our June 2008
"Cruiser of the Month" in his black Mustang convertible was led by Lee & Gary, followed by the rest of the cars from the top 3 Blocks to block 4 that
becomes the "Staging Area" for Old Town's signature event. Mike Singer
who had been at the controls of the "Blue Room", playing a mix of
nostalgic music and radio "Jingles", gave the safety announcements.
Played the National Anthem, "Wolfman Jack" proclaimed, "It's the
Saturday Nite Cruise", for this the 938th running of this tradition. Bratt & Lee would lead the Cruisers
up the even side of "Deac Hundley Avenue", Mike Singer announced the
Flag Winners as the rest of the 170 cars in parade formation, made the
turn by "Kids Town" on to the "Bricks", delighting an extremely large
crowd of cheering spectators, on both sides of the Avenue. "Rain or
Shine" every Saturday night of the year, there is nothing quite like it
for the "Cruisers" and it is always a treat for those watching it from
the sidewalks and boulevards.
Thank you Old Town for letting us, the
curators of this "Rolling Display of Automotive History", the cars that
are the "Stars", to be their guests this evening. Thank you to the Old
Town Merchants Association and the Sponsors of this event, "Valvoline",
the "General Store", the "A&W", "Out of this
World Embroidery", Pepsi, Roberts Brothers,
Race Depot & "Flippers"
just to
name a few. Thank you to
Allan, Joe,
Nikki,
Lee, Bratt,
Gary, Dave,
and the entire Cruise Staff and fellow Cruisers for
making our 290th consecutive Saturday a
fun and safe one.
Tonight's random drawing winners that and received the coveted "Old Town
Checkered Flag" along with $25 cash, A Case of Oil from Valvoline and a drink
from the Tropical Breeze.
Congratulations to the Checkered Flag Winners!
