May 31, 2008
Summer is officially here, well
temperatures anyway. 90 degrees that is the normal and the humidity is
climbing as the week ends, the first Topical Storm, Arthur, may send us some rain
next week. Anyway, Linda, K4EIO and myself, K4SLB,would pull our
'61 Corvair on to Carroll Street
just a few cars behind Steve Mc, K4SKM, in his
'64 Monza convertible as he was
headed for the "Top of the Hill". So we just kept on to the "Parkway"
for our weekly pilgrimage to Old Town. Arriving a few minutes before our
regular time
Gary greeted us at the gate with
that big grin of his. Bratt would be around the corner
from the
Clock under the overhang next to
the office, she did come out into the sunshine to register us.
Bob Miriello, our
May "Cruiser of the Month" had his '69 Chevrolet Nova SS, in it's
place of honor by the Office. On ether side of him were 2 other
members of the "Red Line Rodders", Tom with a '64 Chevy II and Jim in
his 39 Ford Street Rod.
"Big John"
had the
1934 Ford Tudor,
Hot Rod. In his favorite spot, Bob was in the
"Looney Bin with his GMC, Cris & Larry had their '65 Mustang next to
him. Kathy C had the Fairlaine in it's favorite spot. Roger & Sue had
their Camaro just where they like it, Shane parked next to them in his
'57
Chevy, James
'67 Firebird was nearby.
Graham, G4HFG
from Oldham, England, checked in over the radio a
little early today.
We situated our cars in to our favorite spots
behind "Black Market Minerals". Conrad & Daughter Samantha
were out in his
1NFT57 just after we were set up.
Bill & Doris would stop by for
a chat about the time than Nick, in his
'32 Deuce Coupe' and Mark in his Ground
pounding Chevelle backed into spots just down from us and Dan would
arrive in his
'59 Edsel and park down by
Roberta the "Beer Lady" while she was setting
up for the evening.
Linda and I would
make our first trip to the top of "Trophy Row"
Most of the "Red Line Rodders" were in place.
John had a Chevelle convertible
in his "Decade of Cruising" spot and Bob & Marge were nearby in their '40 Buick,
Don & Jackie were in "Pearl" their Model A. Ben
Karen and the Kids were behind the stairs.
Emil was back out in his
"Fat Fendered Ford" just
up from the 3 Amigos, that were out in a couple of their favorite
Corvettes and Camaro. Morris was next to him in his 2nd '50 Ford,
sporting a new interior. Those 3 Guys from Winter Haven were back at the
top of the Block.
Bill's
"Showtime" pickup was against the fence, the other Bill with his
'54 Merc pickup and Leon in his
'57 Chevy pickup. As we headed back
to our car we would visit with the rest of the Cruisers that had made
their way in to "Town". We did hear a few complaints about it being too
hot. Well, we are in Florida would be our answer along with, "That is
why we are here", comment from Linda & I. We even spotted Asa
holding down the office for
Nikki, OK, so Esther was
supervising him.
It was time to head
out to
"Flippers"
for dinner, so once again up "Trophy Row"
Dave had his "Mint Julep"
'57 Chevy in his spot, even Joe had his '56
Ford under the canopy.
John B was parked in his
'66
'Vette by the Maintenance Shop near Louie Z that had his "Grocery
Getter" in his "Decade of Cruising" spot.
By now the actual occupants
of the "Looney Bin" were back from lunch Mark R was in the mix as was
"Scary Larry" and Dana.
Bert & "Ernie" had the '66 Comet near the stage.
Jane
took great care of us as usual. On the way back down to the car, I
spotted
Charlie talking with Emil as we made our way around the corner. I
stopped into the "Blue Room" to say Hi to Mike Singer. We
stopped to watch STS-124 Discovery make it's way into Space, what a
beautiful sight even some 70 miles from the launch pad. By now there were
a few more people in "Town" there was rumor that Dan Haggerty would be
out to "Marshall" the Cruise tonight. After arriving back to Block 4
Don & Tara were down near Dan Z and Dave & Nancy that were out in
the '55 T-Bird.
Coy stopped by as did many of the "Regular Spectators".
Doug & Trish were spotted in their '68 Bronco.
"Snoopy" had his London Bus out in Block 4.
Bob & "Bo" parked the '64 Corvair and the '36 Ford
behind the Roller Coaster, Roy would join in with them by moving his
Monte Carlo down from Block 3. Mark
was out in his '56 Chevy "Junkyard Jewel". "The Dukes" were set up on
their corner drawing quite a crowd including Pep & Nancy. The day was spent visiting, talking cars
and HAM Radio, the Weather and the upcoming 18th Anniversary of the
"Saturday Nite Cruise©" that is happening next week, June 7th.
Ed, WB8BHL stopped out for a visit, Linda & I would make another trip up
to the top of "Trophy Row" with him, he took a few photos that I hope he
shares with us.
Sarah and Mesha stopped by
with the "Flag Winners" just after 8:20,
Bob Miriello,
would take his last run up "Deac Hundley Ave"
as our
May "Cruiser of the Month"
led by
Lee &
Gary,
followed by Dave Dean's '57 Chevy with Dan Haggerty and the A&W Root
Beer Bear as the "Marshall's" of tonight's event and the rest of the cars from the top 3 Blocks
to block 4 that becomes the
"Staging Area" for Old Town's signature event.
Mike
Singer who had
been at the controls of the
"Blue Room", playing a mix of
nostalgic music and radio "Jingles", gave the safety announcements.
Played the National Anthem, "Wolfman Jack" proclaimed, "It's the Saturday Nite Cruise", for this the
936th running of this tradition.
Bratt & Lee would
lead the Cruisers up the even side of
"Deac Hundley Avenue", Mike Singer announced
the Flag Winners as the rest of the 224 cars in parade formation, made
the turn by "Kids Town" on to the "Bricks", delighting
a large crowd of
cheering spectators, on both sides of the Avenue. "Rain or
Shine" every Saturday night of the year, there is nothing quite like it
for the "Cruisers" and it is always a treat for those watching it from
the sidewalks and boulevards.
Thank you Old Town for letting us, the
curators of this "Rolling Display of Automotive History", the cars that
are the "Stars", to be their guests this evening. Thank you to the Old
Town Merchants Association and the Sponsors of this event, "Valvoline",
the "General Store", the "A&W", "Out of this
World Embroidery", Pepsi, Roberts Brothers,
Race Depot & "Flippers"
just to
name a few. Thank you to
Allan, Joe,
Nikki, Ron,
Lee, Bratt,
Gary, Dave,
Shawn and the entire Cruise Staff and fellow Cruisers for
making this our 288th consecutive Saturday a fun and
safe one.
Tonight Linda & I would make our way back to part II of the evening, we
wanted to get an interview with Dan Haggerty so that we might share it
with you in the weeks to come. Allan was doing his usual High Energy
performance interacting with all that were in attendance. Dan would take
stage and talk about his interest in Cars and motorcycles and "Family
Atmosphere" events, he was impressed as much with us as a group as we
were with him. Thank You Dan for coming out and sharing with us.
