Today would be another day of friendship, HAM Radio and Old cars for us
at Old Town. Linda, K4EIO and myself, K4SLB, would have our meeting at
the "Top of the Hill" with Steve Mc, K4SKM and Mike, N4HHA and daughter
Kristen, KJ4BST would follow behind us on the "Parkway" for our weekly
pilgrimage to a Mecca for the Automotive History lovers. We would also
be meeting up with fans of this event from other places in the world,
attendees that have come over the radio to be with us every week or have
been avid readers of this publication. Even
Jane
would come out on a day during a week off with family in town to
meet up with us all. Graham, W4HFG
and Carole, his wife, from Oldham, England, would also be in town and
visiting with everyone. Kevin, KM4FSU, John, KG4BFJ local regulars would
join us.
Red Racer, Ted, KE4TTE would also
come out and take photos, Allen, M3ELP and his son Mark, M3GZS
from Runcorn, England, they had also visited with us a year ago and I
think they will be back next week.
Bruce, KD4KXE in his Cobra
was in block 3. So as you can see, a lot of Ham radio people along with
the great cars.
Bill & Doris
stopped by for a chat with the crowd that was forming on block 4.
Ed & Evelyn in here '64 Coupe had joined us as did Gary & Wanda in their
'55 Chevy. Dan Z had his '33 Ford
Speedstar just down from us. Bob, Nick and Mark were across from us in
the 68 Chevelle, 32 Ford and the '70 Chevelle.
It was a great day for all that made their way out. Of course the Block
1 bunch were in place less Bill's "Showtime" pickup. So Leon and Bill
had to make up for his absence, the 3 Amigos had out their complement of
Chevrolets and Emil was out in his "High School Flame". Gary & Helene
were in their '66 Galaxie not too far away from Bob & Jerri's '63
Corvair Coupe. Darrell had his Galaxie just where he likes it. John had
his "Double Nickel Express" in his "Decade of Cruising" spot and most of
the "Red Line Rodders" were in place. Don was giving us some pre show
entertainment, he was playing his Banjo over the Stages PA System,
Jackie was setting next to him, Bob was nearby in his '40 Buick. Dave
had his "Mint Julep" '57 Chevy in his spot. "Big Daddy" was parked next
to it, it has been a while since I have seen him out. Louie was out in
the Nova wagon. "Big John" had the
1934 Ford Tudor,
Hot Rod. In his favorite spot, Bob was in the
"Looney Bin" with his GMC. Cris & Larry had their '69 Mustang next to
him. Bert & Ernie had their '66 Comet next to Allan's new command post.
Pep & Nancy were out as was Coy and the Old Town Dancers. Dock was
painting the Anniversary T-Shirt art on a window at the General
Store. "The Dukes"
were doo ing what they doo best on the corner drawing a large crowd.
Yes, we did make it to
"Flippers"
for dinner, Annette, N4HHI joined us at a table for 10 I might add, as
did Fred from Michigan, Selina, substituting for Jane did a good job
taking care of us during our normal 4:00 meal. We even spotted Charlie
headed into the dinning room with Emil.
The night was a bit of a blur, I did see Doug and Trish in their '68
Bronco and Camaro, Tom & Chris in his Gazelle. Bob with his '36 Humpback
Tudor. So many people and you would think that our 8 hour day would
allow for a little time for relaxation, tonight wasn't the case.
Sarah stopped by
with the "Flag Winners" just after 8:20,
May 2008 "Cruiser of the Month"
Bob & Kathy Miriello in the their '69 Nova SS
were led by
Lee,
Dave &
Gary, followed by the rest of the cars from the top 3 Blocks
to block 4 that becomes the
"Staging Area" for Old Town's signature event.
"Mustang Mike" who had
been at the controls of the
"Blue Room", playing a mix of
nostalgic music and radio "Jingles", gave the safety announcements.
Played the National Anthem, "Wolfman Jack" proclaimed, "It's the Saturday Nite Cruise", for this the
932nd running of this tradition.
Bratt & Lee would
lead
Bob & Kathy Miriello, our
May "Cruiser of the Month" in their '69 Chevrolet Nova SS, up the even side of
"Deac Hundley Avenue", for the first time of their reign,
"Mustang Mike" announced
the Flag Winners as the rest of the 239 cars in parade formation, made
the turn by "Kids Town" on to the "Bricks", delighting
an extremely large crowd of
cheering spectators, many rows deep on both sides of the Avenue. "Rain or
Shine" every Saturday night of the year, there is nothing quite like it
for the "Cruisers" and it is always a treat for those watching it from
the sidewalks and boulevards. We even had an Auxiliary "Waver" in the
back of "Elvira", Mark, M3GZS from Runcorn, England. Graham &
Carole experienced their first trip up the "Bricks" with Mike &
Kristen in their '63 Corvair Spyder.
Thank you Old Town for letting us, the
curators of this "Rolling Display of Automotive History", the cars that
are the "Stars", to be their guests this evening. Thank you to the Old
Town Merchants Association and the Sponsors of this event, "Valvoline",
the "General Store", the "A&W", "Out of this
World Embroidery", Pepsi, Roberts Brothers,
Race Depot & "Flippers"
just to
name a few. Thank you to
Allan, Joe, Ron,
Lee, Bratt,
Gary, Dave,
Esther and the entire Cruise Staff and fellow Cruisers for
making this our 284th consecutive Saturday a fun and
safe one. Get Well, Mike Singer, we all miss you.
